CAFIA and Customs Administration did not release 22 tons of mouldy cocoa beans

04/09/2018

Within inspections of imported foodstuffs originating outside the EU, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) detected a non-compliant lot of raw cocoa beans amounting to 21,988 kg. The inspection activity was carried out in co-operation with the Customs Administration of the Czech Republic. The consignment in a container from Nicaragua with 478 bags of the commodity in question was detained at the premises of the Customs Authority in Paskov. Company DAJANO TRADING COMPANY s.r.o. in Ostrava was then the supplier into the CR.

The CAFIA inspectors detected that all checked bags with cocoa beans were contaminated by mould visible to the naked eye, further that a condensate was present on the walls and the container smelt after mould. The inspectors assessed the foodstuff as unsuitable for human consumption and decided that it would not be released into the internal EU market.
