The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority performed controls of quality and correct labelling of butter spreads and emulsified fats that are distributed in the Czech market. All samples taken by the inspectors conformed to the requirements for quality and the prescribed fat contents, only in a few cases specification of the percentage of butter contents was missing among the data declared on the label. The only case qualified as false labelling referred to a blended emulsified fat imported from Denmark, the label of which was declaring the product to be butter. Though, in
conformity with the Food Law and the respective decree, the term butter refers only to a dairy product containing solely milk fat, therefore it is impossible to get butter mixed up with other kinds of fats. As a result, the CAFI Authority prohibited to keep on releasing such a falsely labelled product into circulation.
The butter spread should contain at least 31 % of animal fat and should be stored at temperatures between 4° and 8° C. The label of butter spreads should specify apart from other things the name of the butter kind, contents of fat and dry matter, as well as the type of flavouring applied in particular product.
The emulsified or blended emulsified fat simply said is a butterlike product made of edible fats and oils, and should contain between 10% and 80 % of the milk fats. Such fats must be protected from direct sunlight and stored at temperature of 15°C.
