Ban on Instant Coffee with Prohibited Substance for Enhancing Erection imposed by Inspection Authority

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (hereinafter CAFIA only) banned selling of product INSTANT COFFEE MIXED in 160 g packages produced by COFFEE FARMER Co., Ltd., country of origin: Thailand. Laboratory analysis found content of effective substance siledenafil in amount of 39,4 mg per batch (1 sachet) and lactose concentration of 886 mg per kg. Substance sildenafil is not allowed by legislative provisions to be used in food industry. Sildenafil is usually used in medicaments enhancing male erection. Unconscious using of the substance could cause serious health problems to cardiac patients and to people with high blood pressure. Moreover there was no mention about lactose on the label, but lactose is strong allergen and its content must be visibly marked on the label. For the above mentioned reasons the product cannot be considered as safe, and as violates the Regulation (EC) 178/2002 and the CAFIA immediately ordered its withdrawal from the market.
Distributor in the Czech Republic – company SIAM Centrum s.r.o. – was selling the product via e-shop on website www.siamcentrum.cz and in retail premises SIAM Centrum based on Pražská 141, 261 01 Příbram.
For the above mentioned malpractices the Inspection Authority will launch an administrative sanction procedure. Inspection Authority inputs the notification on harmful foodstuff to the European rapid alert system (RASFF).
