02/28/2018

In 2017 the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) carried out the total of 45.530 entries into premises of food business operators, public catering, custom warehouses and Internet shops.

This number included 27,077 inspection entries into retails, 11,522 into public catering premises, 9,653 into food production premises, 2,081 into warehouses, 840 into primary production, 443 into custom warehouses, and 792 into other places (for example inspections during transport, etc.).

In the previous year, CAFIA detected the total of 3,184 non-compliant lots of foodstuffs and other products, which is about 15% of assessed samples. The highest number of non-compliant lots were sampled in retail – 2,583.

As regards the country of origin, the highest number of detections concerned foodstuffs imported from so-called third countries at which 27.6% of assessed lots failed to comply with requirements of national and European legislation. As regards foodstuffs from European countries, 17% of inspected lots failed while domestic foodstuffs failed in 9.9%

The most problematic commodities were honey (51% of non-compliant lots), meat products (18%), fish (18%), wine (18%), fresh fruit (17%), milk products (14%), and food supplements (12%).

Similarly as in 2016 and 2015, public catering sector was the most problematic segment. CAFIA carried out the total of 11,522 inspections in restaurants, bistros, beer houses, bars, confectionary shops and further types of public catering premises and found 2,973 violations, out of which 2,072 concerned failure to comply with good hygiene practices. The premises were closed in total of 59 cases. Violation of legislation was stated in every fourth inspection carried out in this segment.

CAFIA inspectors carried out the total of 650 inspections focused directly on Internet sale of foodstuffs. CAFIA inspections are also more and more focused on inspections of foodstuffs offered or promoted on social networks such as Facebook or Twitter.

In 2017 the total of 2,172 administrative procedures led with food business operators in which fines amounting to 111,450,300 CZK were imposed were concluded. CAFIA also imposed 11,837 bans on placing foodstuffs on the market and the total value of these banned foodstuffs amounted to 28,133,593 CZK.
