CAFIA found kale with chlorpyrifos exceeding the limit

11/08/2018

Within an inspection targeted at foreign substances in fresh fruit and vegetables, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) detected non-compliant lot of foodstuff “Kale free” at the premises of company Tesco Stores ČR a.s., Ústecká 1905/8, Děčín.

Fresh kale in free sale from a container was concerned, namely lot: 4952000, country of origin: Poland, at which laboratory analysis carried out by CAFIA confirmed contamination by pesticide chlorpyrifos amounting to 0.16 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg). The respective piece of legislation lays down that the maximum limit for presence of chlorpyrifos is 0.01 mg/kg. Chlorpyrifos is an insecticide which is used as a protection of plants against insect pests.

The abovementioned facts show that the operator violated Regulation (EC) No. 396/2005 on maximum limits for pesticide residues in foodstuffs and feedstuffs. CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with the operator.

The Authority also investigates the case within the supply chain.

CAFIA already informed of similar case in its press release of 26th October 2018.
