The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) ordered company Lidl Česká republika, v.o.s. to withdraw a non-compliant foodstuff from the market network. Following product is concerned: “Kania CURRY KETCHUP Mild”, with best before date by 28th April 2018, producer: Lidl Česká republika, v.o.s. Further investigation showed that the product originated in Germany.
A laboratory analysis carried out by CAFIA confirmed the content of tomatoes by a half lower than required by national decree for foodstuffs labelled as ketchup. The proportion of tomato dry matter (so-called refractometric tomato dry matter) shall be at least 7%, however, the analysis showed that its proportion amounted to 3.5% only. It was thus misleading information for consumers as regards the a food parameter which had a significant impact on the nature of the foodstuff. Labelling of the product thus failed to enable consumers to get true information on the real nature of the foodstuff, and under name ketchup, they might have expected a product with higher content of tomatoes.
CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with the inspected person.
