The lengthy process that has resulted in an explicite method of verification of the prescribed quality of ketchups testifies that it is not always easy to expose food adulterations. The Decree No. 332/1997, Coll. of L., issue by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic clearly stipulates that ordinary ketchups should contain minimum 7 % of tomato part and in ketchups labelled as Prima, Extra or Special the tomato part should reach even 10 %. Despite this Decree has been in effect for five years there has not been yet introduced any explicit method verifying this basic quality indicator in ketchups.

The regulation that is effective in the Czech Republic from last year imposes an obligation to specify in the label of packed beef meat– apart from other things – also the meat category, which is whether the meat comes from a bull or a cow. Under the Decree No. 326/2001, Coll. of L., issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, it is in responsibility of everybody releasing cut up beef meat into circulation, either packed or unpacked, to provide the meat label with such data that will inform consumers which head of cattle the meat comes from so that the consumers can buy meat of their own choice.

During the past days inspectors of the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority assessed already 662 manufacturing, warehousing and retail facilities handling with food. The highest numbers of premises were assessed in the regions of South Moravia, Hradec Kralove, Pardubice, Plzen and Karlovy Vary, where the water receded enough to let the inspectors carry out their work. Based on a preliminary estimate, about 90 % of all facilities potentially hit by the floods were inspected. Only about 60 % of points of sale, situated in the flooded areas, have so far been inspected and assessed in the territory of Prague.
