The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) has repeatedly inspected whether producers observe so called “Meat Decree” (amendment to the Decree of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic No. 326/2001 Coll.) which last autumn laid down the criteria for particular meat products. According to this Decree, producers who want to label their products with a particular name (e.g. “špekáček”, “vysočina”, “herkules”, but also for ex. “beef in own juice” etc.) have to observe determined sensory requirements, composition of the product, and other physical and chemical properties.

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) continues to cooperate with coeliac associations in inspections of gluten in foodstuffs. These associations help CAFIA to identify foodstuffs that may contain gluten which is not declared in the composition on the packaging. Such products are generally considered as gluten-free and for people suffering from coeliac disease they present invisible danger that could threaten their health.

Before the accession of the Czech Republic to the European Union and even now, after the accession, our food business operators and control bodies supervising food safety are literally bombarded with series of EC inspections. So far, members of these missions have only been experts from the “old” EU Member States. However, the situation begins to change. Since October, experts of the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) are members of EC control missions.

The new Act on Viniculture and Wine Production (No. 321/2004 Coll.), which came into force on 28 May 2004, alters certain duties concerning half-fermented wine and its releasing into circulation. Firstly, not all wine musts in fermentation can be labelled as “half-fermented wine”. As this specific beverage favourite and known only in the Czech Republic, except few exceptions, has become a national speciality, only grape must in fermentation which is extracted from grapes harvested and processed in the Czech Republic can be labelled in this way. If this beverage is produced from grapes exported from abroad, it can be marketed under name “grape must in fermentation”.

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) inspected liquid flavour enhancers – soy sauces, in order to check whether they do not exceed maximal limits for 3-MCPD (3-Monochlorpropane-1,2-diol). The inspectors focused mainly on products imported to the Czech Republic from third countries: China, Malaysia and Vietnam, since according to inspectors´ own findings and information from control authorities of other EU countries these products often contained higher amounts of 3-MCPD in the past. For the complexity of results soy sauces from Great Britain and the Netherlands were also checked.

Also seasonally sold forest fruits which now appear mainly on stalls and markets must comply with relevant legislation. They must be, above all, safe, properly labelled and in certain cases they must satisfy relevant Czech State Standard (ČSN 46 3030). It is not without interest that this Standard applies only in the Czech Republic whilst there is no similar regulation applicable within the EU Member States.

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) points out that all sellers of wild mushrooms are required to have a valid certificate which proves that they have passed tests in their knowledge. Tests may be carried out at relevant Regional Hygienic Station which also provides information about dates on which the tests can be taken. The excuse of certain sellers that they are not informed about this obligation will not be taken into account, since the legislation provided for this obligation already in previous years and was amended recently, on 16 June 2002. The majority of vendors who fail to present the certificate are persons selling mushrooms near woods and along roads. Such persons also break other requirements the most often.
