The representatives of the Hungarian General Inspectorate for Consumer Protection (GICP) were interested in the system of food control in the Czech Republic

10/10/2003

At the beginning of October the Hungarian representatives of the General Inspectorate for Consumer Protection visited the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority. They were interested in the system of food control in the Czech trade network and retail establishments. Accompanied by Czech colleagues, they inspected several outlets of the retail chains which are also active in Hungary. The Czech inspectors demonstrated on-the-spot methods used for food controls, explained official sampling techniques, showed how data are inserted and processed in the internal information system. Hungarian inspectors were informed about the Czech legislation and, namely, enforcement of corrective measures, administrative proceedings and penalties imposed. They appreciated the advanced level of technical facilities used by Czech colleagues and the elaboration of consumer protection regulations.

The General Inspectorate for Consumer Protection was established in 1991 when several authorities (Institute for Commercial Quality Control, Association for Testing and Quality Control) were put under one umbrella. The General Inspectorate supervises the safety of consumer goods, foodstuffs, services and honest business practice. The Inspectorate also participates in the harmonization of legal regulations with EU, performs product quality and safety tests and educates consumers.

The representatives of GICP have visited Brno several times since 2001 when a collaboration agreement concerning market surveillance was signed between involved parties.
