CAFIA continues checking the foodstuffs that could contain gluten

09/10/2003

CAFIA evaluated the second phase of controls of foodstuffs, which could potentially contain gluten and where the consumers aren’t warn of this possibility by a health claim at product’s label at the same time. Such foods can be dangerous for people suffering from coeliac disease.

Although the Act on foodstuffs and applicable Decree dictate to label the foodstuffs in case that consumer can not suppose the product contains gluten with affirmation “Unsuitable for people with coeliac disease”, gluten can occur on the sly in some kinds of foodstuffs. Such an example can be flour or breadcrumbs that producer uses for thickening but he doesn’t mention them among the ingredients.

All the selected and tested products (16) were assessed to be safe for people suffering from coeliac disease.

CAFIA intends to monitor the broadest scale of foodstuffs by systematic inspections divided to several phases. To tip and choose particular product, CAFIA cooperates with associations of the people suffering from coeliac disease from the beginning of this year. CAFIA provides those people with the results of inspections. Furthermore, CAFIA makes public all the inspected products on its web pages too.

You can find the results of this and previous control at the web address www.szpi.gov.cz

The list of analysed products is only in czech version.
