The full-fat mustard produced by Boneco came to the notice of the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority due to alert of the Consumer Association. The results of inspection carried out by CAFIA proved that labelling of the mustard was not accurate.
The producer declares on the label of some of its products that the mustard is “free from preservatives”. But, it also says that the product contents include potassium sulphite (E 224), which is a preserving agent according to a definition of the relevant regulation. The regulation, though, admits to use the substance E 224 also as an antioxidant, which the manufacturers add to maintain colour, this is, for example, the case of the production of mustard. Therefore, in the opinion of CAFIA specialists, the labelling of the above mustard is inaccurate and might lead to dual interpretation. The producer is to alter the mustard labelling within a determined period of time.
The substance E 224 – in addition to mustard – is also added to non-alcoholic beverages, dry fruits, vinegar and potato products, and is also used for preservation of fresh fruit and vegetables that are not to be further processed.
The regulation admits the use of E 224 in a limited amount. Based on the results of the laboratory analyses that CAFIA performed, the contents of this substance detected in the Boneco mustard are much lower that the limits permitted. The consumer health, therefore, has never been at risk.
