In compliance with Act No. 110/97, and in wording of the subsequent regulations, on Food and Tobacco Products, everybody who releases foodstuffs into circulation is obliged to provide them with labelling with fair data. Labelling of meat product has to specify their ingredients - it should be stated on the label what kinds of meat were used in their production. The CAFIA inspectors will verify whether the meat products actually contain only those kinds of meat that the producer declares on the label.
By help of this more firm control the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority intends to ensure that consumers will receive true information on labels in order to be able to decide whether they buy or not the foodstuffs containing beef.
There is currently no laboratory method known that might help detect the causative agent of BSE in a processed meat product. Summarising information about the Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and BSE coming from the sources of the World Health Organisation will be presented on the CAFIA web sites in the next few days: www.czpi.cz.
