The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) is now taking new samples of agricultural crops, cultivated in the regions affected last year by floods. These days, when the harvest of the whole range of vegetables is culminating, the inspectors are taking samples directly during their fieldwork at the producers’. Although CAFIA competences include rather producers-entrepreneurs who put their production into circulation, the inpsectors take samples at random at the self-suppliers’ in the selected regions and with the approval of the field owners as well. The Inspection Authority can thus gain wider knowledge of the current situation. The samples are continuously analysed in the laboratories and no finding of exceeding the limit has been proved so far. As soon as the results of the analyses are complete, CAFIA will directly inform municipal authorities of the relevant region and, of course, the public. 

According to the experts, it is virtually impossible that fruit and vegetables should be contaminated by these substances via soil. The majority of foreign substances is lipotropic. It means that they are soluble in fats well and that they do not penetrate into the plant tissues from the soil. In case, when some of these substances, present for example in dust or emissions, would get caught on the surface of fruits, it is sufficient to wash fruit or vegetables well or to peel them for safety’s sake. Moreover, in these improbable cases, the consumer would have to consume a great amount of these vegetables and fruit so that his or her state of health may be somehow affected. 

All the year round, CAFIA has been continuously monitoring the occurrence of the whole range of heavy metals, pesticide residues and another foreign substances. Just last year, CAFIA performed almost 140 000 laboratory analyses, and only in 66 cases (0,42%) it was proved that the limit, set for these substances, was exceeded. However, neither of these findings was connected with the regions affected by the last year’s floods or with Neratovice surroundings. During common inspections, aiming at the whole spectrum of plant origin foodstuffs, no inadmissible contamination, which could be provably related to the floods, has been discovered so far.
