The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority evaluated the inspection concerning the obligation for the dealers to hold a certificate of qualification in order to be allowed releasing the mushrooms growing wild into circulation, which would prove their knowledge of mushrooms. This obligation came into effect as of 16 June 2002 and relates to the new Act No. 146/2002, Coll. of L., on the National Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority, amending the Food Law and thus also altering the requirements for mushroom sale and processing.

CAFIA checked on the obligation to hold the above certificate mainly in dealers offering mushrooms at the marketplaces and along roads. Although the CAFIA inspectors started to perform inspections in the mushroom dealers immediately after the obligation becoming effective, only 15 out of 21 persons inspected submitted the required certificate. Those without the certificate were ordered to stop selling mushrooms until they get it. The certificate on the knowledge of mushrooms is normally issued by the public health authorities (Sanitary Stations) upon passing a special examination.

As part of the inspection, the CAFIA inspectors checked also on the conditions under which the mushrooms were released into circulation, their quality and labelling. Pursuant to the Decree the mushrooms must no be sliced: only one cut is admissible so that the stipe remains connected with the pileus. It is not allowed to peel the pileus, with the exception of yellow boletus. The temperature prescribed for storage and transport of mushrooms should be between 0° and 10° C.

The inspectors assessed 28 batches of mushrooms growing wild. Only 5 batches did not comply with relevant legal regulations. Positive news is that the inspectors did not discover any non-conformances in quality of mushrooms sold. All the identified non-conformances related to labelling (the label did not specify types of mushrooms, gathering date and use-by-date) and to requirements for the release of mushrooms into circulation (the mushrooms were sold at temperatures higher than laid down in the relevant decree).
