Information on non-quality vegetables supplied to the Czech market from foreign countries was not confirmed

11/04/2004

kvetak.jpg The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) has recently repeatedly focused on the quality controls of certain kinds of vegetables, such as cabbage, cauliflower and carrot, and apples. The aim was to verify the actual situation of these commodities on the Czech market.

Without regard to the country of origin, CAFIA inspectors checked 618 batches of cabbages, cauliflowers, carrots and apples in 89 warehouses with fresh fruit and vegetables (46 of which were retail outlets and 43 were wholesales, in particular hypermarkets and supermarkets). Non-quality goods were identified in 11 cases, most of the goods came from Czech suppliers. The breach of the quality requirements was probably caused by unsuitable storage in domestic warehouses, or during sale, it was not, however, caused by producers or in the country from which vegetables (and apples) were imported.

zeli.jpg The inspection has shown that absolute majority of these commodities on the Czech market is of domestic origin, and that the cause of their impaired quality is improper storage and insufficient sorting during sale. Information that our shops were “flooded” with cheap and non-quality goods originating from foreign countries was thus not confirmed.

Tables with results of the inspection are available in Czech version
