Experts of the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority received a training in negotiating in European Institutions

06/01/2004

At the training centre of the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA), Brno was from 25 - 27 May held a Seminar entitled “Negotiating in the European Union”. This seminar was intended for CAFIA experts who participate in negotiations of working parties and committees of the European Commission (EC) and of the Council, as well as for CAFIA staff who are responsible for foreign relations.

Seminar conducted exclusively in English was organised by the European Institute of Public Administration, Maastricht (EIPA) and was co-financed from the resources of the European Union.

The demandingness of work at working parties and committees of the EC and of the Council has been singnificantly increasing with the enlargement of the European Union since individual countries attempt to press their own interests. Grater emphasis is therefore put not only on language qualification but also on skills in the field of negotiating.

That is why this seminar was drawn up as a cross-section through the whole negotiation process, from its preparation, through the negotiation itself, to the assessment of results achieved. Several case studies simulating the negotiation on the ground of working parties and at COREPER level were also part of the seminar. Authenticity of the program was stressed, among others, by complete audiovisual facilities with microphones for each participant, “official” tags and “representation” of a particticular Member State.
