The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority has withdrawn from the market dried mushrooms sold under the name of “Judas Ear”, which were imported in the Czech Republic from Vietnam.
CAFIA detected salmonella in two samples of these mushrooms during an ordinary inspection and ordered immediately withdrawal of this product from both distribution and sales. At present the withdrawal of batches risky to human health (identified as DMT 05/12/203 and DMT 20/08/2004) has almost been completed.
The “Judas Ear” has to be thermally treated before being added into meals, at best by boiling. If consumers are informed about the prescribed procedure of the mushroom processing, i.e. especially its thermal treatment, they are not put at any risk when eating meals prepared in the above mentioned way.
The “Judas Ear” (Hirneola auricula-judae), growing also in this country, is a variety of mushroom known in Czech also as “Bolcovitka bezová”. It is a variety of wood mushrooms, which grows especially on dead wood of different deciduous trees, most often on black elder. The “Judas Ear”, sold in this country as a Chinese “black mushroom”, has almost indistinguishable taste from the local Judas ear. It is recommended to boil it before using it in cooking.
The information on a mushroom risky to human health has also reported to public health authorities.
