In a response to repeated suggestions of consumers as well as bee community information, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) carried out goal-directed inspection, in order to verify if honeys produced by particular producer really do not comply with regulations in force.
CAFIA inspectors took in the premises of big marketing chains the total of 7 different samples of honeys, supplied by the company JSG FOOD s.r.o., Radobyčice 2, Plzeň. These samples were put through analyses to prove the quality of honeys according to the regulations in force and above all to prove the adulteration of honey by adding sugar based on sweet corn and cane using the isotopic analysis method. Laboratory analyses were carried out in accredited laboratories run by Institut für Honig – Analytic Quality Service International GmbH Flughafendamm, Bremen and partially also in the Bee Research Institute in Libčice nad Vltavou.
None of these samples complied with regulations in force and six of them were proved to contain unpermitted sugar additives. Although the honeys were safe, they were adulterated. The consumer was decepted and the producer enriched himself to his detriment. More over, honest beekeepers who do not turn to the adulteration were economically harmed.
As said CAFIA´s Director General, Jakub Šebesta, when similar findings had been last time discovered, such practices are unacceptable and the Authority punished them severely. The inspectors will remain to pay attention to the honey inspection at retail outlets.
Batches of adulterated honeys which have yet not been sold are banned to be marketed and in administrative procedure CAFIA will impose sanctions to the persons inspected. The State Veterinary Office under which competence the production of honey comes has already been informed about the result of this inspeciton.
A summary of found deficiencies is presented in the table enclosed.
