CAFIA revealed 2 cases of consumers’ misleading as regards meat type in kebab

06/12/2018

Apart from hygiene checks at the premises providing public catering, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) also focuses on good practice related to labelling of offered products. In this relation, CAFIA currently detected two cases of misleading consisting in provision of misleading information of types of meat in kebab.

  • Operator of the premises Mitan Enez, Náměstí 1. Května in Kuřim offered meal “Döner kebab with veal” in the menu. The inspectors took a sample into a laboratory to determine the type of meat. The analysis proved that apart from beef, also turkey and chicken meat were contained.

The inspected person thus provided misleading information and CAFIA ordered the operator to re-label the meal in order consumers could not be misled.

  • Meal labelled as “Big Plate of Meat Only” of which the staff informed consumers verbally that beef was contained was offered on the offer table and in the menu at the premises of Ahura kebab, Hálka Pelánová, třída Osvobození 139 in Otrokovice.

Presence of beef, turkey and chicken protein was proved at the laboratory in the sampled meat (part of the meal of kebab type) despite beef was offered to consumers.

The operator was subsequently ordered to label the animal type of meat correctly in the proximity of the offered products and prevented thus misleading of consumers.

CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine and continue with inspections of labelling of meals at public catering premises.
