CAFIA IDENTIFIED A VERY RISKY PRODUCT CONTAINING EXTREMELY HIGH VALUES OF LEAD

10/02/2001

Based on a incentive of a consumer the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority identified in the market a product that might represent a risk to human health and whose contents of lead detected were exceeding the hygienic limit.

The product was marketed under a name of ASTRUM MA MADHULENE, and was labelled as "a highly pure herbal extract having distinctly regenerative and stimulating effects on pancreas". Laboratory analyses identified values of lead highly exceeding the hygienic limit, 41,500 mg/kg, while the permissible MRL value is 8 mg/kg.

The product was imported to the Czech Republic from India by a company Emil Havelka-ASTRÁL. The original Indian producer is Triguna Ayurvedic Research Laboratory, Okhla, New Delhi.

Based on the CAFIA's identification the product was mainly sold in a network of shops known as "Astrological Pharmacy" and presumably via Internet.

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority immediately imposed a ban on the sale and distribution of the mentioned product as well as on a number of other products manufactured by the same Indian producer. Samples of other products sold by the company Havelka-ASTRAL were taken for laboratory analyses. CAFIA will inform about the results of analyses tomorrow.

Despite CAFIA's immediate intervention, we cannot exclude that the mentioned product could be found in households, as its expiration term ranges from 2 to 3 years and it might have been bought a longer time ago.

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority strongly advises the consumers against taking the product.
