The consignment was detained at the customs entry point in Rudná u Prahy, where CAFIA takes samples to check certain foodstuffs. The laboratory analysis proved that hazelnuts contain prohibited amount of aflatoxins that belong to dangerous substances threatening human health. As natural toxins they are produced by certain moulds affecting in particularly some cereals and nuts.
The European Commission pays high attention to the inspection of aflatoxins in foodstuffs. For this reason, consignments of selected kinds of nuts, such as hazelnuts or pistachios from Turkey or Iran, peanuts from China and Egypt, but also dried figs from Turkey, are checked very often at entry points to the EU. In the Czech Republic, such point of entry is in Rudná u Prahy, where the CAFIA inspectors take samples for inspection, before the products are placed on the market.
The information about contaminated consignment was notified to the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF).
The CAFIA opinion was transmitted to the Customs Office in Rudná u Prahy that will decide the fate of hazelnuts.
