CAFIA detected slimming food supplement from Australia without information on ionising irradiation

11/23/2018

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) revealed a non-compliant food supplement Suns Chitosan Fat Blocker, CHITOSAN – fibre, labelled with best before date by: 02/2021, producer: Natural Pharmaceuticals Australia Pty Ltd., Unit 15, 15 Mahogany Court Wilawong, QLD-4110 Australia.

Laboratory analysis carried out by CAFIA proved that the product was treated by ionising irradiation without indicating this fact on the labelling. Food legislation explicitly stipulates the obligation to provide consumers with information of treatment by ionising irradiation if the foodstuff or its ingredient had been treated this way. Ionising irradiation is one of the methods how to eliminate microorganisms.

With regard to the facts mentioned above, CAFIA inspectors ordered the importer into the CR, business person Ivo Kleňha, Prague 4 to withdraw the supplement in question from the market. CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with him.

Treatment of foodstuffs and raw materials with ionising irradiation is, according to experts, in the interest of public health protection as it may prevent effectively for example occurrence of undesirable contamination of, inter alia, dried herbs and spices. However, in certain EU Member States it is still an open question and certain consumers are afraid of this technology. There is therefore the requirement for labelling of irradiated foodstuffs, raw materials and ingredients so that consumer may decide according by their choices.
