The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority identified during inspection and analysis of the product Hami, Apple mixed feeding (baby food), sold in 190 gram glass jar with metal cap and date of production: 04.03.2002 and use-by-date: 04.03.2004, produced by Deva, a.s., Nové Město nad Metují, a hygienic limit exceeding value of patulin. While the Decree of the Ministry of Health CR determines a maximum limit of 0.02 mg/kg for baby food, the CAFIA laboratories determined in their analyses the value of 0.0855 mg/kg.

Patulin is a carcinogenic substance and belongs to a class of mycotoxins. They originate as a toxic product of some moulds. Patulin is, most often, detected in apples and apple juice, although it was identified in other fruits as well. This substance may also induce some other diseases.

The CAFIA inspectors discovered the contaminated baby food in establishments of the Carrefour CZ, s.r.o., shopping chain. Both the shopping chain and the producer were ordered to withdraw immediately the product from sale. The control sampling of other batches was carried out directly in the producer premises and the samples are currently analysed in CAFIA laboratories.

This product may be harmful, above all, to infants and small children. In the case of grown-up persons the mentioned decree sets out an admissible limit of 0.10 mg/kg.
