CAFIA banned 22 tons of poppy seeds with pesticide carboxin sixfold above the limit

10/29/2018

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) found presence of pesticide carboxin in foodstuffs “Mák modrý – BLUE POPPY SEEDS, packaged à 4.45 kg, country of origin: Turkey”, which exceeded the permitted limit. The sample was taken at the storage of company QUWAT GROUP s.r.o., Řípovská 1044, 67401 in Třebíč.

As regards the lot of poppy seeds in question, laboratory analysis proved almost sixfold higher concentration of pesticide carboxin compared to the permitted by legislation. The laboratory detected value amounting to 0.290 mg/kg while the limit laid down by legislation is no more than 0.05 mg/kg.

Company QUWAT GROUP s.r.o., Kotkova 24/517, 61800 Brno was the supplier of the total volume of 22 tons of the non-compliant poppy seeds, and company YUMURTACILAR ZAHIRE TARIM ÜRÜNLERI SAN.TIC LTD.STI., Turkey was then identified as the producer in the accompanying documentation.

CAFIA imposed an immediate ban on placing of the foodstuff on the market in order it could not be placed on the Czech market and Czech consumers were not thus threated.

CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with the inspected person.
