Today CAFIA entered into the Rapid Alert System (RASFF) information on the finding of foodstuff Kysané zelí bílé ELTOM 500g (white sauerkraut), use-by-date: 7/10/2012, country of origin: Poland, producer: Gospodarstwo Rolno Warzywne, Ježówka 83a, 32-340 Wolbrom, Poland. The product was injurious to health due to the presence of formic acid which was found in a sample in the amount of 2116mg/kg. The foodstuff was evaluated as unfit for human consumption because of its contamination by extraneous substance. Formic acid is not authorised by Decree No. 4/2008 Coll.
The product caught attention of the inspector because preservative E 236 was mentioned on the packaging. This is name for formic acid which is nowadays used as a preservative in feed for farm animals. The laboratory tests confirmed presence of this substance and therefore the Inspection Authority ordered the importer, company Hortim – International s.r.o., Ostrava – Třebovice, to withdraw the mentioned foodstuff from distribution network. The importer fulfilled the measure and all 578 pieces of product were withdrawn, however, 22 packages were sold.
By offering the foodstuff containing the unauthorised substance which can harm the human health and what is more, declaring this on the package, the producer proves his fundamental ignorance of safety standards and food legislation. It could be deduced from the cases in the last month that at the present time, Polish inspection authorities have not safety of food production under their control.
