At the turn of September and November CAFIA inspectors were checking how an amendment of Decree No. 326/2001 Coll. which prescribes stricter quality and sensory requirements for some meat products is observed.

From 15 September to 5 October, CAFIA inspectors checked directly at place – hence in retails – altogether 1162 meat products from 105 various producers. Only 46 of them (it means 3,9 %) didn’t fulfil the prescribed sensory requirements such as taste, smell, appearance, consistency or colour or that they were labelled by an incommensurate quality grade.

The real composition of 156 samples was analysed in laboratories. In 14 cases (it means     8 %), the composition of the product didn’t comply with the prescribed criteria: lower content of pure protein was proved in five samples of ham, presence of the starch was detected in one sample of ham and presence of forbidden poultry meat was proved in seven samples of various products. Small sausages, called in Czech “špekáčky”, that were made by company Schneider – masokombinát Plzeň, s.r.o., contained even so called poultry separate (meat separated by machines), which is expressly forbidden by the Decree.  

CAFIA forbade to put all the product that didn’t comply with prescribed criteria in circulation and imposed corrective measures to the inspected persons. 

The amendment of the Decree was initiated by producers themselves who were responding to the low quality of some meat products sold at very low prices.

The Decree precisely states which concrete products must comply with prescribed sensory, physical and chemical criteria and which content they shall have in order to be designated like this. In accordance with the Decree it is also impossible to designate the products that do not comply with prescribed requirements, by derivatives, diminutives or by various modifiers which could mystify the consumers. That’s why CAFIA as deception of consumers qualifies also such names of incommensurate products as “vysočinka” (what means “little vysočina”; “vysočina” is a Czech name of a sausage). Marking meat products with absolutely different names as for example “opékáček”, “buřtík” nebo “buřtíček” (these are Czech synonyms for “špekáček” and their diminutives) is not assumed as deception of customers.  But in such cases customers should realise that these products do not have to comply with the prescribed quality requirements.
